[edit]The name of the municipality likely derives from a Latin form of the words mont (“mountain”) and beau (“beautiful”). It is also possible that the municipality was named after French diplomat and politician Louis Napoléon Auguste Lannes, 2nd duc de Montebello (1801 - 1874).
