All -> all singular

[edit]

@Rua: Hi! I noticed now that the ”All” should be changed to ”All singular” or something like that so no one thinks that it is ”de lilla pojkarna”, when it should be ”de små pojkarna”. Can you change it to ”all singular”?Jonteemil (talk) 13:50, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Is this the only adjective where the singular and plural definite aren't the same? —Rua (mew) 17:17, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Rua: I believe so, including its derivatives like jätteliten, pytteliten etc.Jonteemil (talk) 20:22, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Rua: Another thing that must be fixed is that I can’t seem to find away to put a - over the masculine form in T:sv-adj-reg. This must be able to be done since all adjectives don’t have a masculine form. For example I’ve never met a multiplicable or alkaline man before :).Jonteemil (talk) 15:48, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
That applies to modern Swedish, but does it also apply to all varieties of Swedish that fall under the "Swedish" label on Wiktionary? —Rua (mew) 15:51, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Rua: Both things apply to Standard Swedish, it’s not a dialectal variation.Jonteemil (talk) 23:26, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Rua: Btw, I think attributive/predicative really should be implemented in the template, as we have over at sv.wikt.Jonteemil (talk) 00:09, 2 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

I will try to look into doing this sometime, but I can't make any promises about when. —Rua (mew) 00:28, 2 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Grammatically inaccurate

[edit]

This module doesn't reflect Swedish grammar very well, probably due to a lack of knowledge on part of the creator(s). The forms it simply calls "indefinite" are used both attributively for indefinite nouns and predicatively for any noun, including definite and proper ones. This means that the "definite" forms here (as the module simply calls them) are only used attributely, never predicatively. Furthermore, the indefinite superlative forms can indeed be used attributely, in a few constructions such as "göra det på bäst sätt" ("do it in the best [possible] way").

These minor inaccuracies may not sound like a problem, but they are. Purely from the information given in one of these tables, a reader may draw the conclusion that e.g. "Kina är stora" ("China is big"), "Han är längste i gruppen" ("He is the tallest in the group"), or "Det här bordet är minsta" ("This table is the smallest") are correct sentences, even though they are all incorrect and would confuse a native speaker. In addition, the construction "på bäst sätt" above would seem impossible to make even though it is correct.

To rectify all this and avoid confusing people, I believe we should make a few simple changes. First, the "indefinite" header should be changed to "indefinite/predicative", and the "definite" header could be changed to "definite attributive", or similar. Then, note 2 (the currently inaccurate one about superlative indefinite forms) could be reworded to change "only" to "mostly" or something similar. Glades12 (talk) 15:53, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Someone with knowledge of Swedish grammar will know that the indefinite form is used predicatively as well. I don't think it's necessary to state this explicitly, it only makes it harder to read. Wiktionary isn't a grammar book. —Rua (mew) 19:13, 24 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
