counties to South Sudan

[edit]
  1. @Benwing2 Please add counties as a political subdivision for South Sudan. For example, see w:Lol State#Administrative counties. It is needed for Category:en:Counties of South Sudan. Thanks.
  2. Can someone nominate or grant me WT:Template editors access please? I have this in Wikipedia, and I have my own private Wikipedia/Wiktionary merged wiki that is my sandbox (for my academic research).

municipalities to the Czech Republic

[edit]
  1. @Benwing2 Please add "municipalities" as a political subdivision for the Czech Republic. For example, see Velim.

@Dpleibovitz I made the requested changes, apologies for missing your earlier ping. As for template editor status, can you post in the Beer Parlour about this? There is a standard procedure to follow for requesting this, but I don't know what it is unfortunately. It is supposed to be more lightweight than becoming an admin, maybe you need a certain number of admins to agree, not sure exactly. Benwing2 (talk) 06:52, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Fuzhou, Fujian

[edit]

@Fish bowl I see you pinged me earlier, somehow I missed it. Can you clarify what the issue is with Fuzhou/Fujian? Benwing2 (talk) 06:54, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Benwing2: The entry 烈嶼 has |p/Fujian|c/Taiwan (w:Fuchien Province, Republic of China) but is categorized into Category:zh:Places in China (w:Fujian). I attempted a fix, which caused some module error at Category:zh:Places in Fujian instead. —Fish bowl (talk) 00:35, 22 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Ukrainian cities

[edit]
  1. @Benwing2 Shouldn't the names of cities of Ukraine be changed to their Ukrainian versions, like on Wikipedia? (Kiev->Kyiv, Odessa->Odesa; Kharkiv is, weirdly, already in Ukrainian)
Currently, this change wouldn't affect anything, as there are no categories for terms related to these cities yet. Underfell Flowey (talk) 19:25, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
    1. @Benwing2 Still waiting on the answer. --Underfell Flowey (talk) 05:51, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Underfell Flowey Apologies, I missed or overlooked your ping among lots of others. I have made the change Kiev -> Kyiv; Wiktionary's preferred spelling is still Odessa, so I made 'Odesa' an alias of 'Odessa'; you might want to bring up this issue in the Tea Room (see the Jan 2023 discussion here: Wiktionary:Tea room/2023/January#Kyiv and Kiev that led to switching the preferred Wiktionary spelling to Kyiv). Cantons in France

[edit]

@Benwing2 Please add "cantons" to the list of political divisions in france. For example, see Category:en:Cantons of France. Dpleibovitz (talk) 19:16, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

"commonscat" is always in English and prevent using translated "wp" or "wpcat"

[edit]

@Theknightwho or @Benwing2 Sorry for mentioning you; it is important. I imported this module into ckbwiktionary and while I translate "wp" (and "wpcat"), I see the commons categories also translated, but they are always in English on Wikimedia Commons and we don't have to inherit the "commonscat" from other variables. I know this is not related to English projects, but there are a lot of editions of Wiktionary in other languages and we should do something to make it easy for them. Thanks! Aram (talk) 07:36, 3 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

As a general rule you shouldn't blindly import enwiktionary modules into other Wiktionaries because they were written with the English Wiktionary in mind and not other Wiktionaries; a lot of fixes will be needed to get things working well on other Wiktionaries. If you are interested in helping build up a framework for easier localization of the English Wiktionary modules, that is fine but it's not high on our priorities. The commonscat is added to topic categories here: Module:category_tree/topic_cat#L-414; you might need to change that line in your local version. Benwing2 (talk) 08:20, 3 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2 Thank you for your reply! It's clear that most languages import modules from English projects (except in rare cases) and that innovation mainly happens in English, rather than in smaller projects. I understand you're focusing on English Wiktionary, but it would be great if updates could also benefit other projects—similar to how Wikipedia respects other languages and makes localization easier.
The modules here are quite numerous and somewhat complex, but I’ve done my best to simplify localization for ckb. For example, in Category:Languages of China, the flag image wasn’t displaying for us, so I created wikt:ckb:Module:category tree/poscatboiler/data/country translation and used it like this, which made it work. I’ve also localized country names and languages and may turn this into a tool in the future.
To resolve Template:commonscat category titles, you can use {{#property:P373}} instead of using Wikipedia articles/categories. Simply add this to any category linked to Wikidata, and it will automatically display the correct Commons category title across all projects. You can also set it up so that if no Commons category exists, the box remains hidden. Thanks! Aram (talk) 19:55, 3 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
