@JohnC5, I think there's a problem with your solution after all, when you ask gsub to capture groups of two characters it only returns odd-even pairs instead of all pairs within the word.

Any alternative ideas or should I revert to gsubbing each pair individually? Crom daba (talk) 00:17, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
