Souletin dialect
[edit]@Santi2222 Will this module support all dialects (for example: Souletin) or just the standard? فين أخاي (talk) 13:54, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- For now, only the standard pronunciation is generated. Some dialect-specific features, such as the lack of palatalization in Navarro-Lapurdian, or the aspiration of "h" in northern dialects are allowed in the prescribed standard pronunciation. Those differences can be easily predicted so I'll definitely add them (the dialectal aspiration of "h" is already shown, in parentheses). Another thing that I'll probably add to the module are the different realizations of <j> (which vary greatly, as can be seen in joan). Actually, 99% of Basque-language entries here in Wiktionary are in Standard (Written) Basque; so the "dialectal" pronunciation is the way a native speaker would pronounce that word in a formal context (that is, speaking Standard Basque with his/her local pronunciation).
- In the specific case of Souletin, its phonology is quite divergent from that of other dialects (contrasting aspirated consonants, nasal vowels and phonetic stress). That, along with the lack of a standardized orthography, makes me think it would probably be easier to create a different module (perhaps as Module:eu-pron/souletin, or something similar) than to adapt the existing one. Anyway, Wiktionary's current coverage of dialectal Basque is quite limited, so for the time being it's probably easier to add the pronunciation manually.--Santi2222 (talk) 15:59, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
