[edit]From Middle English Mycheloure, from Old English miċel (“great”) + ōfer (“ridge”). Recorded as Ufram Majorem in 1087 from Old English ōfer + Latin maior (“great”), and as Magna Oura in 1223 from Latin magnus (“large”) + Old English ōfer.
