From Middle English Mycheloure, from Old English miċel (great) + ōfer (ridge). Recorded as Ufram Majorem in 1087 from Old English ōfer + Latin maior (great), and as Magna Oura in 1223 from Latin magnus (large) + Old English ōfer.
