[edit]As a Slovene, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Jewish, Slovak, and Czech (Medvěd) surname, all from common Slavic for bear, from Proto-Slavic *medvědь (“bear”). Compare Nedved. Also sometimes Americanized from Russian patronymic Medvedev, of the same meaning.
