Links to pronunciation guide and edit layout explanation
[edit]One of the things that many paper dictionaries have on every page are short reminders of the phonetic alphabet and of common abbreviations. I notice that editors are hyperlinking the infrastructure words "IPA" and "SAMPA" in pronunciations to Wiktionary:Pronunciation key. (Internally) linking infrastructural words is considered a bad thing by some editors. (Eventually, if all words were given an IPA pronunciation, every article in the entire main namespace would have a link to Wiktionary:Pronunciation key.) I also notice that Wikinews uses the site notice to good effect. I propose that the site notice be modified to include links to our entry layout and pronunciation key, as follows:

- I think including a short pronunciation guide across the bottom of the page is a great idea. Print dictionaries usually only deal with one or two languages though - we'd need lots of symbols to cover all of our languages. I think we have a few choices:
- Just put the English symbols for now.
- English plus the most common of the other major European languages.
- Something customizable from the user's Preferences page.
- Base our choice on what languages currently have many pronunciations here.
- Even for English we'll have to be careful to choose words which are pronounced with equivalent phonemes in all dialects. That means watching out for the w:cot-caught merger and words which use either /æ/ or /ɑː/ depending on dialect. — Hippietrail 05:48, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
- The fifth choice is outlined above: Don't include any symbols explicitly, but do include a hyperlink to our pronunciation key page. I am not aware of a way to customize what is displayed from the "interface language" section of preferences, which would be how to implement option 3. And I think that whatever subset of symbols we select will be considered inappropriate for some. Also note that we have three separate pronunciation systems: IPA, SAMPA, and "AHD", which makes for a lot of symbols. ☺ Uncle G 13:20, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

- Which idea are you referring to? Would links to Wiktionary:Entry layout explained and Wiktionary:Pronunciation key at the top of every page not be at least as useful as the link to current events at the side of every page is? This isn't something for MediaWiki:Editing because it's geared towards readers, so that they can quickly get to the pronunciation key and layout explanation when reading entries. - I think this idea is impractical. In addition to the fact that we already have at least three acceptable pronunciation systems we also need to consider whether we would require the user to scroll down to the key. If it is to become something that stays fixed in position, it would just use up so much more of a page. Eclecticology 22:44, 22 May 2005 (UTC)
- I don't see what is impractical about the proposed text given above. No scrolling or fixed positions are required, moreover. [edit]Hello, good news! Thanks to FreedomFighterSparrow and Brion, unregistered users can now hide the sitenotice again. Previously, they were forced to see it continuously.
In all cases, please use the sitenotice with care, and keep in mind that occasional visitors see sitenotices on all their visits, if they visit less than once a month or they don't click "dismiss" and save a cookie. Nemo 15:43, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
