[edit]Anglicized form of Irish Mac Cearáin, variant of Mac Ciaráin (“son of Ciarán”). It could also be an Anglicized form of Irish Mac Carrghamhna (“son of Corrghamhain”), a personal name composed of the elements corr (“sharp”) + gamhain (“calf”).
