[edit]First attested as mersum in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Marsum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian *mersk (“low-lying swampland”) and hēm (“home, settlement”) or from the dative plural form of *mersk. Compare Marsum.
