[edit]Uncertain, but certain etymologies exist:
- Marikina is named after a young priest named Mariquina.
- Pre-Hispanic oral tradition says that Marikina is named after a lady named Maria Cuina.
- Marikina is intended to be the name of a chapel, born out from linguistic misunderstanding, and derived from "marikit na po", said of a Filipino worker.
- Marikina is named after the town of Mariquina in Spain.
- Based on historical documents held by the Marikina city government, Marikina is originally called Mariquit-na (Marikit-na) before it is renamed after Félix Berenguer de Marquina.
