Etymology

Named after a Sufi preacher called Manik Shah; thus ultimately a bilingual compound of Bengali মানিক (manik, ruby) + Persian گنج (treasury, store); the first element is from Sanskrit माणिक्य (māṇikya), a vriddhi of मणिक (maṇika), a compound of मणि (maṇi, gem, jewel) +‎ -क (-ka, diminutive suffix).
