[edit]Named after a Sufi preacher called Manik Shah; thus ultimately a bilingual compound of Bengali মানিক (manik, “ruby”) + Persian گنج (“treasury, store”); the first element is from Sanskrit माणिक्य (māṇikya), a vriddhi of मणिक (maṇika), a compound of मणि (maṇi, “gem, jewel”) + -क (-ka, diminutive suffix).
