Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Turkish Mamayköy (Mamay village), from Crimean Tatar Mamay. The exact etymology of "Mamay" is uncertain; historian Nicolae Iorga associated it with Mamai, the commander of the Golden Horde in the 1370s, whereas local folk etymology connects it with Tatar май (may, butter).
