From Latin (Pagus) Medullicus (country of the Medulli), the local Celtic/Gaulish tribe who had inhabited the area. This name is probably from Proto-Celtic *medwos, from Proto-Indo-European *médʰu (mead), or alternatively *medyos (middle).
