Contraction of Maharashtra. The apostrophe character ' separating:

  1. The first letter, M, of the unabbreviated spelling.
  2. The Hunterian transliteration of Sanskrit राष्ट्र (rāṣṭra), the second element of ‘Maharashtra’.
