Habitational surname from the villages of Lydiard Millicent and Lydiard Tregoze, both in the borough of Swindon. The placename was recorded as Lidgerd or Lidegærd in the Cartularium Saxonicum; the second part of this word coul derive from Welsh garth (cliff; enclosure).
