[edit]First attested as liindonck in 1299. Compound of either Middle Dutch lijn (“flax (Linum usitatissimum)”) or a lost phytonym cognate to Old Norse hlynr and Old English hlyne, both meaning "Norway maple" (Acer platanoides). The second element is donk (“sandy hill protruding above a marsh”).
