Etymology

[edit]

First attested as lirdob and lindor in 1155. Etymology unknown. The toponym has been hypothesised to be a compound of either linde (linden, Tilia sp.) or Proto-Germanic *hlitha (slope, incline) and dorp (village), but these hypotheses do not match with the oldest attestations of the toponym. Compare Lerop.
