[edit]From Arabic يَهُودِيّ (yahūdiyy, “Jew, Jewish”). The definite form اَلْيَهُودِيّ (al-yahūdiyy) underwent assimilation -ly- → -ll- (compare illum from il-jum), whence a new basic form *lahūdī, *lhūdī by backformation.
