Leveroy
Appearance
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as loiverlo in 1244. Originally a compound of an unknown first element and lo (“light forest”). The first element has been variously interpreted as a hydronym, a term connected to German Leber (“tanner”) and Middle High German lewer (“raised burial mound”) and as a personal name. The second element was gradually replaced by rode (“land cleared of trees”).
See also Limburgish Leivere.
