From Latin Hildesindi, later attested as Elsendi,[1] genitive of Hildesindus, from a Suevic and/or Gothic personal name, from a compound *Hildesinþaz, from Proto-Germanic *hildiz (fight) and *sinþaz (journey; companion).[2]
