1. A type of cantonal assembly in Switzerland, where regional voting takes place.

     A ceasefire and a Landsgemeinde were called and the citizens of Schwyz met to decide en masse whether to capitulate and to accept the Helvetic republic.

   • 2017, Matt Qvortrup, Referendums Around the World, page 50:

     After the foundation of the Swiss Federation in 1848, all cantons except those with a Landsgemeinde tradition introduced direct democratic instruments into their constitutions.

Usage notes

• The Landsgemeinde was formerly held in eight Swiss cantons, and still takes place in two (Glarus and Appenzell Inerrhoden).
