Etymology

[edit]

Derived from laiha (thin, skinny) as a byname/nickname. The exact derivation is unknown, however, although such variation is not uncommon in such given names. The place name is from the given name, possibly through a farm name (Laihela ~ Laihiala), in which the suffix -la was later dropped (but preserved in the Swedish name Laihela).[1]

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈlɑi̯hiɑ/, [ˈlɑ̝i̯ɦiɑ̝]
  • Rhymes: -ɑihiɑ
  • Hyphenation(key): Lai‧hia
