Etymology

First attested as Leeg Duirswolde in 1718. Calque of West Frisian Leech Duerswâld, derived in turn from leech (low) and a compound of Old Frisian Djoerd (a personal name) and wald (swamp forest, marsh forest). The element leech was added to distinguish the settlement from Hoogeduurswoude.
