Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German lüge, from Old High German lugī, from the root of lügen (“to lie”).
Merged with related Middle High German lügen(e), from Old High German lugina, from Proto-West Germanic *luginu. With the latter are cognate Yiddish ליגן (lign), Luxembourgish Ligen, Dutch leugen. The two forms were bound to merge as all Middle High German feminines in -en(e) end in -e in modern German.
