[edit]First attested as duabus villis que crimpen nuncupantur, sitis super meruede et super yssel in 1277. Derived from a term cognate to Old Saxon krampo (“hook”), Middle Dutch krampe (“hook”) and the hydronym IJssel. The toponym contrasts with Krimpen aan de Lek.
