From Norwegian kraken (Bokmål entry; Nynorsk entry), from krake (crooked tree; sea monster), from Old Norse kraki (sea monster, literally something twisted), from Proto-Germanic *krankaz (crooked, bent, twisted). Possible doublet of krakeno (pretzel).
