[edit]From Norwegian kraken (Bokmål entry; Nynorsk entry), from krake (“crooked tree; sea monster”), from Old Norse kraki (“sea monster”, literally “something twisted”), from Proto-Germanic *krankaz (“crooked, bent, twisted”). Possible doublet of krakeno (“pretzel”).
