[edit]From Middle High German kornel- (“cornel”) + Kirsche (“cherry”). The first element, which is attested in Middle High German kornelboum and Old High German kornilboum, is from Vulgar Latin *cornicula, diminutive of Latin cornus (“European cornel”).
