Adapted from Swedish Kvevlax (also written Koiffuolax (1440), Kåjwålax (1443), Quiffuelax (1543) in older sources), which in turn is from Finnish *Koivulaksi (thus koivu (birch) +‎ lahti (bay)) or *Kuivalaksi (thus kuiva (dry) +‎ lahti (bay)).[1]
