The second element is from the common Slavic patronymic suffix -ice. The first element is of uncertain origin, possibly from the personal name Koš, Koša, or from Old Slovak kosa (clearing) (from Proto-Slavic *kositi (to reap)), or of Old Hungarian origin. More at Košice.
