[edit]Borrowed from Central Franconian and Low German dialects. More properly spelt Knäbbchen; cognate with regional Dutch knab (“lump, thick piece, e.g. of wood or bread”). Pertaining to the group of words for thick objects with initial kn- such as Knauf, Knopf, Knospe, Knubbel, Knüppel.
