Etymology

[edit]

First attested as cleijnen buttel in 1423. Derived from klein (small, lesser) and a compound of unclear derivation, perhaps composed of Middle Dutch bottel (dogwood, Cornus sp.) and lo (light forest). The element klein was added to distinguish the settlement from Groote Bottel. Compare Budel.
