Attested as de Kleine-Lindt in 1846. Compound of klein (small) and a toponym potentially derived from a hydronym (derived in turn from Proto-Germanic *linþja- (flow slowly, flow softly) or, alternatively, from a term cognate to Old High German lentî (landing).
