Etymology

First attested as apud renum catwijch in 1224. Derived from the toponym Katwijk, aan (on) and the hydronym Rijn. Katwijk is a compound of the difficult to interpret element Middle Dutch kat (cat, mud, ridge, lesser, low-quality) and wyc (village, settlement). aan den Rijn was added to distinguish the settlement from Katwijk aan Zee.
