Karaoke
Appearance
German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Japanese カラオケ (karaoke), from 空 (kara, “empty”) + オケ (oke, “orchestra”), the latter being an abbreviation of オーケストラ (ōkesutora), from English orchestra. The German word may also have been borrowed in part through English karaoke.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun

- (usually uncountable) karaoke (form of entertainment; an individual performance or session of it)
Usage notes
[edit]- Duden gives this word as a neuter, but in practice it is often, and perhaps predominantly, feminine (by analogy with the majority of words in -e).
- The plural is exceedingly rare and probably restricted to informal use.
