[edit]First attested as iudifax in 1165. Etymology unknown. Possibly a compound of iūdicō (“judicial”) + fax (“hair, head of hair”) or Latinized -fahs, as a prefix or suffix found in toponyms meaning an area or plot of short, rough grass. Compare Halifax.
