[edit]First attested as Jowswerd and Jouswird in 1511. Borrowed from West Frisian Jouswert, derived from a compound of Old Frisian Jou (a personal name) or Jouwe and werd (“artificial mound used for habitation”). Compare Jousterp and Jouswier.
