Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Some theories include:

  1. From an alternative name to the orisha Iemanjá, of Yoruba origin.
  2. An adaptation of the Portuguese name "Jana" which, in Portugal and some regions of Spain, are known as magical beings, like river fairies or mermaids.
  3. Originating from the syncretism of African and indigenous beliefs and legends, some legends say that Janaina was a beautiful woman who was born into the Goitacás tribe, in the southern region of the current state of Espírito Santo.
