Etymology

Developed by Swiss botanist Paul Jaccard (1868–1944), who gave it the French name coefficient de communauté.

Jaccard index (plural Jaccard indexes or Jaccard indices)

1. (statistics) A statistic for gauging the similarity and diversity of sample sets, based on the size of the intersection between the sets divided by the size of the union of the sets.

   Synonym: Jaccard coefficient
