From French, from Old French Isignia along with several variants, from Medieval Latin Isienio, from Late Latin Isiniacum, composed of the Gallo-Roman name Isinius + the locative suffix -acum. The name is possibly Latinized from the Germanic name Iso (compare Proto-Germanic *īsą (ice) or otherwise Gaulish Isina.
