Etymology

Learned borrowing from Old Tupi i îukapyrama (literally “the one who will be or must be killed, condemned to death”). Coined by Brazilian poet Gonçalves Dias in 1851.

A more appropriate adaptation would be I-Jucá-Pirama.

1. A poem by Gonçalves Dias, one of the most famous Indianist poems of Brazilian Romanticism.

     Há uma geração que estudou e aprendeu, em suas primeiras letras, o célebre poema épico I-Juca Pirama, que, traduzido do tupi, equivale em português àquele que há de ser morto e que é o grande tema da obra. Quase, avant la lettre, um filme de Clint Eastwood, em sua fase de faroeste italiano, apresentado em dez cantos, organizados em forma de composição dramática. Todos os cantos sempre pautados pela apresentação de um índio cujo caráter e heroísmo são salientados a cada instante.

     There is a generation that studied and learned, in his early literacy years, the famous epic poem I-Juca Pirama, which, translated from Tupi, means he who is to be killed and serves as the central theme of the work. Almost, avant la lettre, a Clint Eastwood film from his Spaghetti Western phase, presented in ten cantos, structured as a dramatic composition. Each canto is consistently marked by the portrayal of an Indigenous man whose character and heroism are highlighted at every moment.

     O “I-Juca-Pirama” é dessas coisas indiscutidas que se incorporam ao orgulho nacional e à própria representação da pátria, como a magnitude do Amazonas, o grito do Ipiranga ou as cores verde e amarela.

     “I-Juca-Pirama” is one of those undisputed things that become part of national pride and the very representation of the homeland, like the magnitude of the Amazon, the cry of Ipiranga, or the green and yellow colors.
