[edit]The town is named after the river, the attestions of which start off in the later 13th century with Medieval Latin Islza, Izlza, Hislsa, Hyslza and the like and only from the 15th century have dropped the ⟨s⟩ in the stem before the ł, apparently based on a Proto-Slavic *Islъža,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eys- (“to rush, to move quickly”),[2] + *-ъlъ + *-ъža (*-ŭɡi̯a suffix retained in river names).
