Etymology

[edit]

From Old Norse Ímulvík. By surface analysis, Homla +‎ vik, where Homla (Old Norse *Ímla) is name of the river, upon which the town is located, from the root *Ímull of unknown origin and meaning. The modern name may be understood as derived from humle + vik (Hop Bay or Bumblebee Bay) but it is historically wrong.
