[edit]Etymology
[edit]The name for the city in New Jersey likely comes from the Lenape phrase "Hopoghan Hackingh", meaning "land of the tobacco pipe". Alternatively, from the Dutch Hoebuck, meaning "high bluff". Though it is entirely possible Dutch settlers successively adapted the original Lenape name to more familiar forms, eventually landing upon the present form, possibly from influence of Hoboken, the district of Antwerp in Belgium.
