From hinter- (“behind”) +‎ Pommern (“Pomerania”), thus “that part of Pomerania that is further from the German centre”.

Usage notes

• The city of Stettin/Szczecin and the Polish territories to its north and west are geographically part of Vorpommern, but since 1945 they may also be assigned to Hinterpommern, redefining the latter, in a political sense, as the Polish part of Pomerania.
