[edit]First attested as hercena and hertra in the mid-11th century. Etymology unknown. Potential derivations include a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *kar- (“shining, protruding”) or Proto-Germanic *haruth- (“woodland”) with pre-Germanic t. No relationship with Herten near Recklinghausen.
