First attested as hedereke in 1188. Etymology uncertain. Potential etymologies include a derivation from Old Dutch Hadurik (a personal name), a derivation from a collectivised form of hederik (charlock (Rhamphospermum arvense, syns. Sinapis arvensis, etc.)) and a compound derivation from heide (heath, heathland) and Middle Dutch reke (boundary).
