Dutch

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]
  • (Overijssel) First attested as hof to henghele in 1381-1383. Likely a compound of Middle Dutch heinge (enclosure) and lo (light forest), although it is difficult to say whether this is the actual etymology of the toponym due to a paucity of old attestations. Compare Hengelder, Hengevelde and Hengforden.
  • (Gelderland) First attested as heingelon in 965. Compound of Middle Dutch heinge (enclosure) and lo (light forest). Compare Hengelder, Hengevelde and Hengforden.

See also Dutch Low Saxon Hengel.
