[edit]FIrst attested as Berum in 1511. Calque of West Frisian Hantumer Utbuorren, derived from the toponym Hantum and a compound of ut (“out-, outer”) and the plural form of buer (“house, cottage”). Originally derived from the dative plural form of Old Frisian bêre (“barn, house”).
