[edit]Etymology
[edit]Hans + nes, first part is a male given name from German Hans, a medieval shortened form of Johannes (“John”), from Latin Jōhannēs, Iōhannēs (variant of Jōannēs, Iōannēs), from New Testament Ancient Greek Ἰωάννης (Iōánnēs), contraction from Hebrew יוֹחָנָן (Yôḥānān), from the Hebrew phrase יהוה (YHVH) חנון (Khanon) literally (roughly) “God is gracious”.
Last part nes (“headland”), from Old Norse nes (“headland”), from Proto-Germanic *nasją (“headland”), from Proto-Indo-European *néh₂s (“nostril; nose”).
